The present day Malakand Division consists of 09 Districts i.e. Malakand, Swat, Dir Lower and Upper, Buner, Shangla, Tribal District Bajaur and Chitral Upper & Lower. It is the largest division in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and has its borders with Afghanistan, Gilgit Baltistan, Peshawar, Mardan and Hazara Divisions.
Today’s Malakand Division with an area of 32007 Sq.Kms having population of 10 million (Census 2023) once used to be mainly comprising four princely states i.e. Swat, Dir, Chitral and Khanate of Khar besides, Protected territory of Malakand. The rulers were known as Wali-e-Swat, Nawab of Dir, Mehtar of Chitral and Khans of Khar and Nawagai.
The region in the past had witnessed worst kind of militancy, historic displacement and devastating floods/earthquake and once known as Switzerland of Pakistan had gone to the mercy of religious warlords and militants as well as natural calamities.
The whole world stood up behind the government of the time and through series of operations and a number of interventions successfully materialized the slogan of “Build, Back and Better” and rebuild the lives in the region within a short span of time.
I am delighted and feel proud to say that today’s Malakand Division offers a complete secure environment, in which the rule of law prevails. The system of governance is much better and improved where public services have been restored and the potential of region in economic growth has been fully tapped. Tourism industry is completely revived and every year million of local and foreign tourists visit Malakand Division. The government is committed to ensure that peace, love and harmony in the region.
